Complete solutions in developing improved ground water management need to integrate supply side solutions coupled with demand management, based on a thorough understanding of ground water resources. Here, understanding ground water resources includes the mapping of aquifers, monitoring them through space and time and viewing problems in the context of social, economic and environmental aspects. The bigger challenge is in translating this knowledge into action, where innovations are required to demystify the invisible resource. This in turn, should enable participatory decision making and management while ensuring equitable impacts.
