India Water Portal is an open, inclusive, web-based platform that shares water management knowledge amongst practitioners and the general public. It aims to draw on the rich experience of water-sector experts, packaging their knowledge and adding value to it through technology, and then disseminating it to a larger audience through the Internet. It is essentially a comprehensive database of knowledge and resources related to water, sanitation, agriculture, the environment, climate change and other related themes and issues in India.

We see the knowledge asymmetry amongst stakeholders of the water sector as a critical factor hampering the sustainable management of our water resources. The Portal seeks to address this asymmetry by sharing best practices, advocating sustainable approaches, bringing transparency in public data and information and spreading awareness.

Our ultimate objective is to address equity and sustainability issues in the water sector. We believe that the Portal has the potential to catalyse change on a large-scale by this sharing of knowledge, leading to improved practices and informed debates.

India Water Portal grew out of the felt need for a single location pulling together various resources in the area of water. This was one of the themes that came out of the first Arghyam conference held in February 2005. The National Knowledge Commission has been a strong proponent of knowledge portals in various areas including water, and was a strong supporter of the creation of a dedicated online resource for water. NKC also encouraged the creation of regional language water portals, and emphasised the importance of working with government departments related to water.

The Portal is a voluntary effort coordinated by Arghyam, a non-profit trust that works in the area of water. The Portal was created in the spirit of sharing and openness by a wide range of partners including technical water experts, research institutes, NGOs, government departments, historians, hydrogeologists, IT specialists, educators and others.

Through the Hindi Water Portal: http://hindi.indiawaterportal.org and the Kannada Water Portal: http://kannada.indiawaterportal.org we have realised an important part of the vision of making water information and knowledge available in Indian languages.
Schools Water Portal: http://schools.indiawaterportal.org
The Schools Water Portal shares learning resources on water with educators, students, school managements and parents. Other than these audiences, however, the Schools Water Portal is open to anyone who is interested in learning about basic water issues in India.
India Sanitation Portal: http://indiasanitationportal.org.in
The India Sanitation Portal shares knowledge and resources on sanitation with practitioners and the general public. It was launched at SACOSAN in November 2008, by the then Speaker of the Lok Sabha Shri Somnath Chatterjee, and was conceived as a collaborative effort between Arghyam, WaterAid, WASH Institute, WES-Net, UNICEF, Wherever the Need, Water for People, SEI, PLAN India and WSP. It was also supported by the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DDWS).
Conflicts Portal: http://www.conflicts.indiawaterportal.org/
