This report captures the learnings from the evaluation conducted in late 2009 and provides insights into the reasons for success and failure of the interventions in seventeen model (rainwater harvesting and sanitation) schools in Karnataka.
The Suvarna Jala Yojana was launched by the Government of Karnataka in 2005-2006. The objective of the programme was to provide safe drinking water in 23,683 schools across the state. In 2007, Arghyam conducted a study on the efficacy of the scheme and made several recommendations to the state government. In 2007-2008, Arghyam also facilitated a network of rainwater harvesting (RWH) experts and grass-roots organisations to create model schools, which demonstrated best practices, for RWH and sanitation in the 7 districts. Thus in 17 schools, a combination of building new RWH structures, renovating the structures constructed under the Suvarna Jala Yojana and providing/improving sanitation facilities was carried out.
