March 18, 2010, Bangalore: Book Release -Public Private Partnerships in water sector – partnership or privatization?

Bangalore:The Campaign against water privatization in Karnataka is supporting Manthan (Madhya Pradesh) to release their book titled ‘Public Private Partnerships in water sector – partnership or privatization?’ in Bangalore. This book is a comprehensive analysis of all the PPP projects in water sector in the country with a critical look at the one-sided push to eventually and completely privatize water in India. Veteran freedom fighter S. Doreswamy and Siddangowda Patil of CPI have agreed to jointly release the book.

Ravi Narayanan, Arghyam advisor was conferred the Knight Commander (CBE) rank of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire by the British Government in 2009 "for services to providing water and sanitation facilities for poor communities". For details about the award, click here .

Ph.D. completion

G.Sridevi of the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore successfully completed and defended her Ph.D. thesis on the use of human urine as fertilizer. Her research was supervised by Dr. C.A. Sreenivasmurthy and supported by a grant from Arghyam. In March 2009, Dr. Sridevi came to the Arghyam office to present the results of her research and formally hand over a copy of her Ph.D. thesis.

 

Visitors to Arghyam

Dr. G.N.S.Reddy of BAIF Institute of Rural Development - Karnataka visited Arghyam in April to discuss taking the successful SACHETANA fluoride mitigation project. An impromptu wide-ranging discussion ensued, with Dr. Reddy offering his insights on many topics. Some videos from his visit can be seen here:

World Water Day

India Water Portal sponsored a meeting at Madivala Tank on World Water Day to draw attention to
the problems of the tank. Water songs, water quality testing, presentations on the
lake and the birds of the tank and a walk around the lake were on the program. The event was covered in local newspapers and TV and on Citizenmatters.in (click here)
